Spock and his family have always been an important part of Star Trek. For half a century, the writers have delved into Sarek’s role in helping the Federation, Spock’s upbringing, and even the diplomatic contributions of both father and son. But Star Trek: Discovery added immense texture to this aspect of the ongoing story by putting Sarek’s family at the center of Season Two, introducing viewers to the relationship between Spock and his previously unknown adopted sister, Michael, and bringing Amanda Grayson to life like never before.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Brian Meloche, associate producer of The Edge, to discuss the importance of Sarek’s family to Star Trek canon. We discuss Spock, Michael, and even Sybok as we explore the complexities of raising multicultural children on Vulcan.
