For almost forty years, the adventures of the characters we love to watch have been continued in novels that tell new adventures and expand upon onscreen events. But these have generally been accepted as having no impact on TV episodes or movies. Star Trek: Discovery is a bit different. Fan-favorite novelist Kirsten Beyer was hired not only to write for the show but to maintain continuity wherever possible between Discovery and tie-in fiction. With this in mind, what can we learn about the crews of the USS Discovery and USS Shenzhou from the novels and comics?

In this episode of The Edge, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson of Literary Treks to discuss Dayton Ward’s new Star Trek: Discovery novel Drastic Measures, tying it in to the Original Series episode “The Conscience of the King” and how Prime Lorca may be a lot more similar to Mirror Lorca than we realized.
