Rod Roddenberry Launches Star Trek Podcast "Mission Log" by Trek fm

There are many Star Trek podcasts out there—including our own Ready Room, Trek News & Views, and Matter Stream—offering a wide range of perspectives on Star Trek. Now Nerdist Industries is teaming up with Rod Roddenberry himself for a deep exploration of the core of Star Trek: the exploration of the human experience.

Mission Log aims to explore every episode of Star Trek in chronological order or air date, including the oft-forgotten Animated Series.

In the first episode hosts John Champion (also of DVD Geeks) and Ken Ray (of Mac OS Ken) take on “The Cage,” and the discussions are set to continue until the final episode of Enterprise, “These Are the Voyages…”

Of course, we speculate that by the time they reach the end of Enterprise there will be a new Star Trek series on television and the Mission Log will continue.

Find out more about this new show in the official press release below.

Roddenberry Entertainment Partners with Nerdist Industries on New Star Trek Podcast

Science fiction leader teams up with online trailblazer and launches free podcast at Star Trek Convention

LOS ANGELES; August 15, 2012 — As the successor of the science fiction pioneer that brought television and film audiences Star Trek, Roddenberry Entertainment has partnered with Nerdist Industries to bring fans a new podcast series with the sole purpose of exploring the Star Trek universe one episode at a time. Titled Mission Log, the podcast features an entertaining and provocative examination of the legendary franchise’s more than 700 hours of television programming. Starting with the series pilot, “The Cage,” and progressing sequentially through the final season of Star Trek: Enterprise, Mission Log delves into the most historical and interesting aspects of science fiction that Star Trek has to offer. The podcast is the first time Roddenberry will lead the dialogue surrounding the plot points, principles and philosophies of Star Trek and how they relate to the human experience.

“I’ve always wanted the opportunity to examine the philosophy of Star Trek from a Roddenberry perspective and get to the core of what has been inspiring fans for decades,” said Executive Producer Rod Roddenberry, son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. “I can think of no better homage to the franchise than to take on 30 seasons of television, comprised of six different series, by journeying into every one of the 726 Star Trek episodes.”

Mission Log will be joining Nerdist’s roster of vastly different, yet equally entertaining podcasts including: The Nerdist Podcast, The Indoor Kids, The Todd Glass Show, Sex Nerd Sandra, Pop My Culture, Mike and Tom Eat Snacks, Comic Book Club, FEAB and more.

Hosted by veteran podcasters John Champion (DVD Geeks) and Ken Ray (Mac OS Ken), Mission Log will offer a balanced yet critical analysis of the underlying themes, metaphors and subtexts intertwined in each Star Trek episode. Along with a variety of guests and interviews, the podcast will attempt to explore Star Trek’s ethical subtext, understand its complex metaphors and finally figure out what was the trouble with those tribbles. Unique to Mission Log, producers and hosts have the opportunity to research the exclusive Roddenberry family archives to consult historic resources, such as Gene’s handwritten notes on his original scripts.

Nerdist Founder and Chief Creative Officer Chris Hardwick said “To be able to facilitate a deep—‐dive into the Star Trek universe for its fans is like a weekly trip to Risa for your brain. You could ONLY accomplish such an undertaking with the generosity and thoughtfulness of Roddenberry Entertainment. I am honored to have Gene’s name and legacy associated with Nerdist!”

Mission Log marks the first piece of new entertainment from Nerdist since their recent purchase by Legendary Entertainment. Much like how Star Trek created an intersection between technology and entertainment, Mission Log ventures into new media while providing audiences with new and interesting perspectives on one of the largest science fiction phenomena of all time.

“As admitted geeks, we are all fans of Nerdist because their entertainment understands and empowers the nerd culture we care so much about,” said Trevor Roth, Chief Operating Officer and Head of Development at Roddenberry Entertainment. “We’re beyond excited to partner with Chris Hardwick and his team and believe this will be the first of many collaborations with them.”

Mission Log will be produced weekly and be available for free download every Thursday on MissionLogPodcast.com and Nerdist.com. Fans are encouraged to engage in the dialogue by posting comments on Facebook.com/MissionLogPod and tweeting at @missionlogpod. Select comments will be incorporated into upcoming podcasts.

Trek Nation and White Room: 02B3 Make International Debuts at Sci-Fi London

UK fans get double feature when Roddenberry Entertainment films land in England

LONDON; April 24, 2012 — Roddenberry Entertainment, the successor of the science fiction pioneer that brought television and film audiences Star Trek, announced today that its Saturn Award-nominated film Trek Nation will make it’s much anticipated international debut on May 7 at the 11th Annual Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film in London’s Apollo Piccadilly Circus at 4:55 p.m. local time. The film will appear as part of a Roddenberry Entertainment double feature along with the company’s groundbreaking 360-degree film White Room: 02B3.

Trek Nation made its US debut in November 2011 on SCIENCE Channel to acclaimed reviews of Rod Roddenberry’s tribute to his father, Gene Roddenberry, including a nomination from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for a 2012 Saturn Award in the “Best Television Presentation (10 Episodes or Less)” category. Through exclusive footage and interviews with devoted fans, including George Lucas, J.J. Abrams, Seth MacFarlane and many notable Star Trek alumni, Trek Nation chronicled a son’s journey to discover his father and the creation that helped define modern-day science fiction.

“By exploring my father through a variety of untapped touchstones, we were able to introduce the world to a Gene Roddenberry it’s never met before. Through this process of humanization, Trek Nation reminds us that none of us are perfect but that within our imperfections lays the potential for greatness,” said Executive Producer Rod Roddenberry.

While it will be the first time a European audience is given the opportunity to view the documentary in its entirety, Sci-Fi-London will also play host to the world premier of Roddenberry Entertainment’s new film White Room: 02B3. Shot with the world’s most advanced high-definition 360-degree camera, White Room: 02B3 stars Breckin Meyer, Tamlyn Tomita, David Blue and Rachel True, as well as Internet icons Tony Janning and Milynn Sarley. The film will debut during the Blink of an Eye program on Saturday, May 5 at 4:55 p.m. local time before it’s screened with Trek Nation on May 7.

Boldly going where no camera has gone before, Roddenberry Entertainment used cutting edge 360-degree SA9 camera technology to create an engaging, interactive audience experience. Sitting in the middle of the room, the camera captures 360-degrees outward in high-definition panoramic video with no gaps or distortion during filming.

While White Room: 02B3 is premiering at film festivals, Roddenberry will also launch it as an immersive cinematic trailblazer in 360-degree dome theaters around the country and as an interactive experience online. A click-and-drag function will simulate the dome experience.

“In addition to quality science fiction, Roddenberry is known for taking strides into new technologies and pushing entertainment boundaries. With White Room: 02B3 we are certainly at the birth of a new kind of filmmaking,” said Trevor Roth, chief operating officer and head of development at Roddenberry Entertainment.
