Sensor Sweep: Iconian Gateways

The Milky Way Galaxy was once home to an ancient race known as the Iconians who had the ability to travel great distances instantaneously using a special gateway. The Iconian gateway created a “door” through which the user could step and instantly appear in another place as far as 70,000 light years away; and the range of this gateway may have been even greater.

Using this technology the Iconians built a vast empire. The ability to instantly appear anywhere in the galaxy allowed them to hold together a vast array of worlds. The magical appearance of their travel earned them the monicker “Demons of Air and Darkness” amongst many.

Eventually the Iconian Empire fell and only two gateways are known to have survived. One was discovered by the crew of the Enterprise-D on Iconia itself in the episode “Contagion.” The second was discovered by the Dominion on Vandros IV, a planet in the Gamma Quadrant. Both of these gateways were subsequently destroyed.
