La-La Land Records TOS Music Collection Launch Celebration

La-La Land will celebrate the release of the complete TOS music collections at the historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on December 3 with a special big-screen showing of the TOS episodes “Mirror, Mirror” and “Amok Time.” In addition, Original Series composer Gerald Fried and writer David Gerrold will give an in-depth discussion after the episodes with host Jeff Bond, who was a Trek music writer and served as a co-producer to the TOS soundtrack.

Paramount to Present Star Trek Into Darkness in Dolby Atmos

Paramount Pictures and Dolby Laboratories have been working together to release the upcoming film using Dolby Atmos technology., which delivers a “more natural and realistic soundtrack that moves sound around and above audiences, transporting them into the outer regions of the universe.” Star Trek Into Darkness will be among the first handful of movies released with this technology.

The surprise premiere of a new teaser for “The Con of Wrath” at San Diego Comic-Con on July 14 showed off a few more of the early faces who have talked to Larry Nemecek about “The Ultimate Fantasy” gone wrong in 1982. North Carolina Modern Film Festival Wrath of Khan Screening with Nicholas Meyer

If you want to chase Kirk ‘round the moons of Nibia and ‘round the Antares Maelstrom and ‘round Perdition’s flames, all while Nicholas Meyer rides shotgun, then you need to set course for Kannapolis, North Carolina, this October. We’re inching closer to the release of the Abramsverse video game for PC and consoles, and developer Namco Bandai has released new footage as part of GamesCom 2012 in Cologne, Germany. The Fall 2012 issue of Star Trek Magazine is out, and this issue is a celebration of TNG’s 25th anniversary with “A New Beginning,” “A Voyage of Rediscovery,” and interviews with John de Lancie, Jonathan Frakes, and composer Jay Chattaway. “Time’s Arrow” takes you on a journey through Star Trek’s past and “Who Goes There” digs deeper into the unusual comic merging of TNG and Doctor Who.

 

Gameforge Confirms Star Trek Infinite Space Cancellation

Last November Gameforge, developer of the free-to-play browser-based game Star Trek Infinite Space, announced the elimination of 100 jobs, placing the future of the game in jeopardy. During the interim it was hoped that the game, which included Mike and Denise Okuda as key consultants, would survive. But this week the worst was confirmed and the game has been officially cancelled.

Star Trek’s original Scotty, James Doohan, finally reached the stars for real this week as his ashes were carried into space aboard the Falcon 9. The rocket was launched from Cape Canaveral by SpaceX, an aerospace company that provides launch services to NASA as well as other government and private agencies, and carried the ashes of 308 individuals, including Doohan.

Intrada Releases Special Edition Star Trek VI Soundtrack

Last year the soundtrack from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home saw a special edition release, and now Intrada is bringing fans the restoration of the Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country soundtrack, composed and conducted by Cliff Eidelman. The original soundtrack did not include all of the music heard in the film; but this new two-disc set will offer the film’s full score with previously unreleased cues and music along with the original MCA album.

USS Enterprise Destroys the Death Star

Abramsverse TV Series Opening Credits Sequence

Following the 2009 reboot of Star Trek by J.J. Abrams many fans have speculated on what an Abramsverse TV series might look like. It’s a farfetched concept to be fair, but it’s still fun to think about. As a taste of what could be, Tobbii Karlsson, known as SirTobbii on YouTube, has recut portions of the opening and closing of Star Trek 2009 to create an impressive credits sequence for the series based on the alternate timeline. As Simon Pegg’s Scotty would “It’s exciting!”

Many fans have long wished for a relationship between Janeway and Chakotay, and one of the most popular ways of expressing this is through music videos. Star Trek Online “The 2800”

With Star Trek Online free-to-play fully out of spacedock Cryptic has begun releasing a new series of featured episodes titled “The 2800.” It’s the fourth series of linked episodes that create a single story arc, and this time the focus is on The Dominion. The first episode, “Second Wave,” debuted on February 11 and four more episodes will follow, one each Saturday, with the climax coming March 10 with the release of “Boldly They Rode.”

An Update on the Star Trek Abramsverse Console Game

Gamers will be interested to know that additional details about the Ambramsverse Star Trek console game emerged this week. We learned that the game will be co-published by Paramount Pictures and Namco Bandai. Additionally a time frame for release was finally revealed and fans should expect to have the game in hand in the spring of 2013, just before the release of the next J.J. Abrams film.

First Contact/Prometheus Move Trailer Mashup

One of our favorite aspects of Star Trek fandom is watching the creative movie trailer mashups that fans produce on YouTube. A new re-imaging of the Star Trek: First Contact trailer by Jamziz2008 combines footage from that film, Insurrection, and Nemesis and sets it to the audio from the upcoming Ridley Scott film Prometheus. The results are surprisingly eerie, just as you’d expect when the Borg come to assimilate you.

TNG Remastered Season One Blu-ray Trailer

As the TNG Remastered sampler disc “The Next Level” hits the shelves, CBS has released a new trailer for Star Trek: The Next Generation Season One on Blu-ray. Billed as “the completely remastered first season in high-definition,” the season one TNG Blu-ray set will be available later this year and it was also just announced that all seven seasons of TNG will be available on Blu-ray by 2015 with a release schedule of two seasons per year.

PrimeTime UGC Episode Two

Star Trek Online’s Foundry tool allows players to create their own content and share missions with the community. To help STO players and authors better understand the Foundry, Cerberus Films is producing a show called PrimeTime UGC. It’s a fascinating concept that is “filmed” entirely within the game. A video recently came to our attention from Germany that will be of great interest to fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The six-minute concert performance by the Symphonic Wind Band of Landau brings to the life the haunting themes heard in the touching TNG episode “The Inner Light.” The wind ensemble is a community band with an obvious love for Star Trek and a conductor dressed in a First Contact-era command uniform.

February 2nd will mark the second birthday of Star Trek Online and Cryptic is getting set to throw a big bash—with something special in it for you. There’s been a lot of buzz since last summer about the new canon Enterprise designed by Adam Ihle and finalized by STO designers, and during the four-day celebration you can take the Odyssey Class 1701-F for a spin and even keep it after the mission. Klingon Defense Force players can also grab a ship of their own—the new Vengeance Class.

Priceline Kills Off Shatner

For the past 14 years William Shatner has been helping individuals save money on travel using Priceline—the past five of those as The Negotiator. And like Captain Kirk himself, he’s had some close calls over the years. At one point he was almost replaced by Leonard Nimoy in one of the campaigns most memorable spots. Still Shatner endured as the price-savvy broker of hotel rooms and plane tickets. But all good things must come to an end, and this week Priceline killed off the Negotiator in a style eerily similar to Kirk’s final demise in Star Trek Generations.

Star Trek 2013 Filming Begins

The cameras have begun rolling on the next Star Trek movie and effects work is underway at ILM. On January 14 Paramount made it official with a press release announcing that principal photography has started on its joint venture with Skydance Productions and Bad Robot. The movie is produced by J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and the script was written by the trio of Kurtzman, Orci, and Lindelof.

Down In Front Releases Wrath of Khan Commentary

Down In Front—the commentary podcast that counts Ready Room regular Brian Finifter amongst its hosts—has released a commentary of great interest to Star Trek fans; and it may just leave you screaming “KHAAAAN!!!!” That’s right, in a recent episode the gang offered their insights into perhaps the most famous of all Star Trek films, “The Wrath of Khan.” All members of the Down in Front family are, in some way, involved in the film industry and work on movies for a living. Star Trek Online Free-to-Play Launches 

The long-awaited launch of Star Trek Online free-to-play took place on January 17 and there was great excitement surrounding the event. STO developer Cryptic Studios teamed up with the gaming blog Massively for a series of special launch events that ran throughout the day. A number of Livestream events provided tutorials for new players while giveaways took place at various locales in-game, including Deep Space 9. So get set to play as much as you like—for as long as you like—at no cost.

CBS Releases the Third Trailer for TNG Remastered

We’re just weeks away from the release of the first full serving of Star Trek: The Next Generation remastered in HD, and CBS has now released a third preview trailer showing the best comparison yet. Unlike the earlier previews, this trailer focuses entirely the incredible details that are bubbling to the surface. Using quick wipes the video alternates between the original SD release and the new HD remastered version of Encounter at Farpoint.

Star Trek Goes to Jolly Ol’ England

If recent moves are any indication, J.J. Abrams may be planning a trip to Jolly ol’ England in the next movie. The growing cast of British actors who will join Pine, Quinto, and the rest of the main crew now includes Alice Eve, Noel Clarke, Joseph Gatt, and Indian-born, London-educated Nazneen Contractor. But the biggest news is the end of the ongoing search for a villain—and possible squelching of the Khan uproar—with the casting last week of “Sherlock” actor Benedict Cumberbatch—who is also British. We can’t wait for May 2013. It’s going to be the bees knees.
