Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-ray vs DVD Comparison

It’s just a matter of days now until the Star Trek: The Next Generation sampler disc “The Next Level” hits the shelves, and YouTube user garthfrank12 has posted a fantastic video comparing scenes from the remastered HD version and the original standard definition DVD release. We’ve seen a few side-by-side examples in previews released as part of the CBS promotional trailers, but this 2 minute 13 second video serves up a steady stream of still shots that highlight the extraordinary improvement in image quality better than any trailer we’ve seen yet.

CBS Releases the Third Trailer for TNG Remastered

We’re just weeks away from the release of the first full serving of Star Trek: The Next Generation remastered in HD, and CBS has now released a third preview trailer showing the best comparison yet. Unlike the earlier previews, this trailer focuses entirely the incredible details that are bubbling to the surface. Using quick wipes the video alternates between the original SD release and the new HD remastered version of “Encounter at Farpoint.” If you’re not yet gathering your latinum for the January 31 release of “The Next Level” Blu-ray, this preview is sure to make it so.

TNG HD Second Teaser: An Original SD and HD Comparison

Excitement has been building since the official announcement that Star Trek: The Next Generation is being remastered in HD and coming to Blu-ray; but the first teaser trailer from CBS didn’t give much an hint as to what we’ll actually see. Now the studio has released a second trailer and we can at last get a glimpse of the amazing clarity this project is bringing to our beloved episodes.

Watch the trailer below, and if you’ve already seen the first part (which is the same as the first teaser) skip ahead to the 1:19 mark for new footage. The first bit of new footage shows a side-by-side of the original “Encounter at Farpoint” jellyfish and the new remastered scene.

The sampler set “The Next Level,” containing “Encounter at Farpoint,” “Sins of the Father,” and “The Inner Light,” is now available for pre-order from Amazon with a release date of January 31, 2012. It looks like we are all in for hi-def treat!

TNG's Missing 13 Seconds

If you’ve got a thing for interaction between Riker and Dr. Crusher an announcement this week by CBS about the upcoming HD release of The Next Generation may cause concern. It seems that 13 seconds of the original film elements from “Sins of the Father” cannot be located and they have been forced to upconvert from Standard Definition video tapes. Here is the scene that is rumored to be missing, posted to YouTube by TrekCore.



Now the question you have to ask yourself is whether this ruins the whole experience for you. “Star Trek: The Next Generation—The Next Level” is scheduled to be released on January 31, 2012 and will include “Encounter at Farpoint,” “Sins of the Father,” and “Inner Light.”
