British actress Alice Eve has reportedly been selected by J.J. Abrams to play an unspecified role in the next Star Trek film, slated for a May 17, 2013 release.
Variety reported on November 30 that the 29-year-old actress—best known for her roles in She’s Out of My League and the TV series Entourage—has joined the cast of what Paramount is still referring to as “Star Trek 2.”
As for what role Eve will play, that’s anyone’s guess. Reports are that she will be playing a character that is new to the franchise. Then the same reports follow that up by saying it is someone Trekkers will be familiar with. Confused yet?
So let the speculation begin. And to kick things off, here are a few possibilities:
The Starfleet psychiatrist who was aboard the Enterprise to study crew reaction in emergency situations. In the episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before” Dehner, along with Gary Mitchell, was affected by an anomaly near the galactic barrier. The resulting psionic powers proved to be her downfall.
The very popular yeoman who was quickly written off the show for behind-the-scenes reasons. There was a sexual attraction between Kirk and Rand, and despite her brief tenure on Star Trek Janice Rand continues to be a fan favorite to this day, and later returned in the TOS movies.
Starfleet historian assigned to the Enterprise in the episode “Space Seed.” When Khan Noonien Singh was brought aboard the ship McGivers was the first to recognize him as a 20th-century prince and tyrant. McGivers became close to Khan and was ultimately exiled with him on Ceti Alpha V rather than face a court martial.
The first female Vulcan seen in Star Trek, T’Pring was Spock’s fiancée. In the episode “Amok Time” Spock returns to Vulcan to mate with her after the onset of pon farr, although ultimately she chooses Stonn after pitting Kirk against Spock in a duel to the death.
Dr. Carol Marcus
A former romantic interest of Kirk and the mother of Kirk’s son, Carol Marcus was one of the Federation’s leading molecular biologists. She worked aboard research station Regula I, and along with her son, David, Marcus developed the Genesis Device which was used by Khan in his attempt to kill Kirk.
Dr. Gillian Taylor
The assistance of Dr. Gillain Taylor was key to the success of Kirk’s mission to retrieve whales from the 20th century in Star Trek IV. Dr. Taylor was a marine biologist at the Cetacean Institute in San Francisco. Her whales, George and Gracie, successfully communicated with a probe that was destroying Earth when they were brought back to the 23rd century.
An All-New Character
That covers characters with whom Trekkers would be familiar. Now that we have that out of the way we must return to the other bit of the report—that Eve will play a character new to the franchise. When they say “the franchise” do they mean the entire history of Star Trek or do they mean this new “reboot” movie series, treating that as a separate franchise?
